FAQ

Frequently Asked Questions

Everything you need to know about maintenance with CSM. Don’t see your question? Contact your local service location.

What is included in a DOT annual inspection?

A federal annual inspection covers brake systems, steering, suspension, frame, tires and wheels, lighting, exhaust, fuel system, coupling devices and windshield wipers, following FMCSA Appendix A criteria. CSM performs Federal Motor Carrier safety inspections at every service location and issues the compliance documentation you need to keep in the vehicle file.

How long does a DOT inspection take, and how long is it valid?

Most annual inspections take two to four hours if no defects are found, longer if repairs are required. The certification is valid for 12 months from the inspection date, so the truck must be re-inspected before that anniversary. Scheduling ahead at your nearest CSM location avoids the seasonal backlog around CVSA enforcement weeks.

Can I perform my own annual DOT inspection?

Yes, if the inspector meets FMCSA qualification standards under 49 CFR 396.19, which requires documented training or certification plus brake-specific qualifications. Many fleets prefer to outsource it because the record-keeping burden sits with the carrier during an audit. CSM technicians are qualified inspectors and supply the paperwork with every inspection.

How often should a semi truck have preventive maintenance?

Most heavy-duty operations run PM intervals every 15,000 to 25,000 miles, or every 250 to 500 engine hours for vocational trucks, though duty cycle matters more than mileage alone. Our advisors will build an interval schedule around your routes rather than applying a generic figure.

How quickly will I get a diagnosis when my truck is down?

CSM is a Kenworth PremierCare Gold Certified dealer, which means our PremierCare ExpressLane service delivers an expert diagnosis and a repair estimate within two hours of arrival. You can wait in the driver’s lounge while the assessment is completed.

Do you service trucks that are not Kenworth?

Yes. Our technicians handle complete powertrain and chassis work across mixed fleets, including engines, transmissions and drivetrains. We stock all-make components alongside PACCAR genuine parts. With 30+ locations across Wisconsin, Michigan, Ohio, Nebraska, Texas and Florida, there is a certified team within reach of most routes.
